Brad Wilson

Interviewed by

Today, we have the privilege of talking with award winning guitarist, Brad
Wilson. Brad, thank you for sharing your time.

Sean, thanks for this chance to get the word out about my new album.

Brad, let's get right into what's new. You have recently released your solo
album simply titled, Brad Wilson. Please, tell us about this release and
your style of music.

I wrote, performed guitar and vocals, and produced the thirteen songs for
this record, working with top professional studios and engineers. The sound and
feel is a blues rock style that lets me rip on guitar yet stays in a song
format. I listen to Muddy Waters and rock like Zeppelin and Allman Brothers, so
it's all in there at times.

What made you decide to release a solo album?

Working hard for the last seven years and two albums with the band STONE, the
group decided to take some time off.

Of all of the songs on this album, which is the one you most enjoy playing
most?

Not an easy question to answer. "Crusin' the Coast" and "Black Coffee at
Sunrise" are a couple of tunes I play at all the shows. Recently I have been
getting into "All Kinds Of A Fool" and "Last Call."

Are you currently touring with the release of this solo album and if so, how
is it going?

Yes, all the shows have been on the West coast, because I am based in Los
Angeles. This October I am planning to do more national dates leading to a major
tour schedule in 2005.

Now, you are also a member of the band Stone. Does the music on your solo
album differ from Stone's music?

No, Not a big change, because Stone is a trio and I wrote all the tunes and
sang the songs from our first two records, Somewhere in LA and Here Before.

Would you mind telling us a little more about Stone, Stone's music and the
members?

On drums J. J. Garcia and Brian James plays the bass. We have toured all
over America and have found ourselves at amazing gigs and situations. What can I
say, when the chemistry is right you generate a band vibe and sound.

Did you have the members of Stone play with you on your solo album?

Yes.

How many albums has Stone released?

Two. Somewhere in LA, produced by the Robb Brothers, had a song called
"Teaser" that John Carpenter placed in the movie Vampires that went on to win a film
soundtrack award called a Saturn Award. The movie starring James Woods, was
number one in the country and really gave us our break to start touring
nationally. The second record was titled Here Before and was engineered by hot
guitarist Doug Aldrich, who is now in Whitesnake. Doug did exceptional work at
mixing and recording the band. The Here Before record kept us on the road for three
years. I wrote all the music, lyrics and spent countless hours on both
records.

Are you guys currently working on a new album?

I am writing songs at this time.

When playing live, will you be incorporating your solo material with Stone
material?

Yes, my solo band has terrific pro side musicians and I am playing a show
that is the best of all my writing.

In regards to touring, which other bands have you guys toured with?

Over the last seven years we have done shows with Cheap Trick, 38 Special,
Paula Cole, Tonic, Blues stars Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, Ratt, Dokken, and
Cinderella. There is more but those come to mind.

Is there a particular band or bands you guys would love to tour with?

I'm a blues guitar fan so I'm gonna say Buddy Guy!

Let's get to know you a little better. How long have you been playing guitar?

All my life, since I was a kid. Through the good times and not so good times.
Everything that has come my way has been the result of my guitar, it is so
much a part of my life. Everyday, most of my life revolves around the guitar.

Have you always played the guitar or have you been known to play other
instruments?

Just the guitar. I write a lot on an old acoustic my wife gave me for my
birthday one year. I was in really bad health and she got it from John Carruthers,
an L. A. guitar-maker superstar. He hand-picked it and I just love it. I have
never been that sick ever again. The power of music.

Where are you located?

Southern California. I love it here, especially on the coast.

Does being in California have a certain influence on your style of music?

Yes, it is true, we are more laid back in Southern California then on the
East Coast. I've been to the East Coast many times.

How about your musical influences? Are there any you'd like to mention?

Blues Stars Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert King and Gary Moore.
Van Morrison as a writer and Jeff Beck for chops with Jimmy Page for record
production. I listen to a lot of music, those are some favorites.

Have you played in any other bands, both known or unknown?

I started out as a teenager with a female singer from the Rolling Stones,
Kathi McDonald on Exile On Main Street. Kathi was touring to support her Neil
Young produced solo album. I recorded a record for RCA with a power pop band
called Blind Date, produced with Jeff Glixman from the band, Kansas. I did an
album with a Gene Simmons backed band called SHAME. We ruled the Sunset Strip here
in Los Angeles. Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam wanted the name Shame for his
solo project. He contacted me, we couldn't reach a deal and the next time I read
the trades he calls his solo band BRAD. They have a couple records out so I
called my band STONE. That is how we got our band name STONE.

As I mentioned in the introduction, you are an award winning guitarist.
Would you mind telling our readers more about the awards you've won?

The Saturn Award from the film organization here in Hollywood is like an
Oscar for scary, sci-fi movies, I share that with John Carpenter, it was all his
movie. I was just lucky to be included. Los Angeles magazine ALL ACCESS gave me
"BEST SONGWRITING" for the Here Before record last year and LA Magazine ROCK
CITY NEWS gave me an award for top blues guitar player three times. Los
Angeles is a big city so it is nice to be noticed for your work.

You have been involved in a handful of really cool projects in the past
where your music has been featured. Just to give our readers a hint of
these projects, the soundtracks to John Carpenter's "Vampires" and "Ghosts
Of Mars" come to mind. How did you come into these projects?

The Robb Brothers are three famous brothers who own LA 's top recording
studio, Cherokee studios. They've hired me to play guitar on some of their
productions. I recently played on Vanguard Records new release, Robert Bradley's
Blackwater Surprise. They introduced me to John Carpenter. The Robb Brothers helped
me mix my new solo record and they are a major force in my career.

It is my understanding that John Carpenter is also a musician. Did you get
to play with him on either of these projects in regard to the music you did?

John Carpenter writes, directs his movies, and plays almost all the music for
his films. I got to know him at social events and we play music together when
we can. Stone recorded our song "Teaser," John heard it and liked the sound.
The Robbs placed the song in the film Vampires. It was an amazing time because
the Robbs and Carpenter were working with Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn on the
Vampires soundtrack and everyday I was in the studio, jams were happening and
the premiere party was a dream come true, a jam of hot musicians with Stone
playing our song "Teaser" to this incredible gathering of heavy hitters,
including the film's star, James Woods. On Ghosts of Mars, I worked separately with
John Carpenter and Bruce Robb. It is a cool soundtrack of LA guitar stars like
Steve Vai, Buckethead, Anthrax and many others.

Has your music been featured in other movie or television projects?

The NBC television show "Passions" has placed my music in the show for the
last four years. It airs all over the world. There have been some smaller,
lesser known movies I have licensed my music for as well.

Do you currently have any projects in the works that you can tell us about?

I am on call for the Robb Brothers and they have a big movie soundtrack
coming up that is huge, but they want it kept out of the press at this time. I
really like the way my new record turned out, all the songs are written to be
played live so I want to play shows as much as I can. The solo band is rocking and
I want to tour the United States and hopefully Europe.

Brad, I want to personally congratulate you on a great album and thank you
for allowing me to write a review on it. It is definitely an album that is
hard to take out of the CD player. I want to wish you the best of luck on
this release and future Stone releases. Thank you for taking the time to
answer some questions. Before we go, is there anything you'd like to say to
our readers and/or your fans?

First, thank you Sean for this opportunity to talk about my music. I think
your work is terrific at both your great music web site and everything you do
for the music scene in New Mexico. I thank the folks who have bought my new
record and look forward to meeting people at the shows. I love America and the
freedom of music. I'm very thankful to be playing rockin' blues guitar.
I wish everyone the best.

Thanks Brad. We look forward to more great music! You can visit Brad's
